MEGHALAYA
The Abode of cloud does justice to the name itself. Meghalaya is one of the seven sisters of India that constitutes the famous North-Eastern states of India. The state capital is Shillong and the state is formed by the detached block of the Deccan plateaus. The climate is usually mild and Cherrapunji, a location in the state, thus records the wettest place in the world.
Due to the favorable climate, Meghalaya is blanketed in lush greenery throughout having some of the distinct species of Plant and animals. Some of them are Pines, Oak, Birch, Beech, deer, wild pigs, anteaters, apes, hares, hornbills, partridges, jungle fowls, etc.
Shillong
Apart from the deep breath-taking beauty, the city is also known for its colonial-style houses shaded by trees and surrounded by green lawns. The place also has a beautiful lake named Umiam lake, the silvery cascade of the Elephant falls and the list goes on and on.
The culture is split into three tribes called the Khasi, Garo, and the Jaintia. All three tribes believe strongly in music and dance as an important element. Their main occupation is weaving and carving, while others engage in extracting iron ore and craft domestic tools.
Police Bazar is also a major attraction here which serves an array of brands, hotels, apparel, merchandise, traditional handicrafts.
Cherrapunji
Described as the wettest place in the world, this place also houses the double-decker living root bridge. This sub-divisional town is also famous for its flora and a natural attraction called the Mawsmai caves, also known for the rocks, fossils, pathways, flowing water which gives a thrilling adventure ride.
Mawylyngnong is another famous tourist spot here, where the visitors can live and experience the food and culture of the village and is titled Asia’s cleanest village. The misty valleys and the waterfalls in the region make a long drive through Cherrapunji ideal for those who love road trips.
Balpakram National park
t is considered the Traveller’s Paradise. This place is referred to as the ‘Land of spirits’ by many tourists that come here to explore the rich bio-diversity.
A Heaven for all wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Some of the species that are spotted here are rare species. Balpakram can be reached by the roads only however, helicopter services from Shillong and Gauhati are available too.
Tura
Perched at the foothills of the Tura mountain range, it is one of the largest towns in Meghalaya.
It is also one of the major tourist attractions in Meghalaya, as the city offers many interesting and unexplored areas. Tura boasts abundant natural and picturesque beauty which is unique throughout the country, making it the most offbeat place in Meghalaya.
Baghmara
Baghmara is situated on the banks of Simsang River, around 280 km from Shillong and close to the border of Bangladesh. It is said to be one of the best places to visit in Meghalaya.
